Worked with an old guy 40 years ago that said it was common back in the 1940s. He used that idea to use a connecting rod and sand paper to grind one in his back yard in the early 1960s.
Today I know companies will grind/repair crankshaft that way in large compressor station engines. One company Reynolds French. /
