I use a paint marker I like to draw :) I do this even if it already has a belt routing label on it and put it were I can see it while installing the belt. If I have to go under it or thru the fender well I draw it there also. Sometimes I draw it out on a piece of cardboard for reference. Most all belt tensioner's have a reference mark of were the belt should operate at I mark that also if I can get to it. Install the belt if it close to home you are good to go if not look it over you missed the mark somewhere are have the wrong belt etc.
Sometimes its located on the belt wrapper sometimes not... Before the internet you could have been chit out of luck. I don't remember the first one I ran across but a Jeep comes to mind and have seen more belt routing issues with them than any other.
Best I remember they were the first I seen were the water pump would spin in reverse rotation of the engine it thru folks lots of curve balls.
