Last week I bought two sets of double ring chains that are in poor condition. I spent the weekend taking them apart and making one good set. A good pair of big chain pliers is worth its weight in gold for doing this.
Several cross chains were repaired with mendable links, so I replaced all of them, but a lot of the remaining cross chains had missing rings. I cut several rings, carefully spread them apart, popped them on the places that were missing rings, and welded them back together. The rings must be very hard because they easily broke if I spread them too far apart.
Is this gonna work, or did I just waste a bunch of time to end up with a bunch of broken links on the ground? These chains are going on my 4840, which is my "Oh crap, better get a bigger tractor to get me outta this one!" tractor in the winter.
