Welding double ring chains?

Last week I bought two sets of double ring chains that are in poor condition. I spent the weekend taking them apart and making one good set. A good pair of big chain pliers is worth its weight in gold for doing this.

Several cross chains were repaired with mendable links, so I replaced all of them, but a lot of the remaining cross chains had missing rings. I cut several rings, carefully spread them apart, popped them on the places that were missing rings, and welded them back together. The rings must be very hard because they easily broke if I spread them too far apart.

Is this gonna work, or did I just waste a bunch of time to end up with a bunch of broken links on the ground? These chains are going on my 4840, which is my "Oh crap, better get a bigger tractor to get me outta this one!" tractor in the winter.

You might need to anneal the weld zone on the rings. If they self quenched when welded, the heat affected zone might be
brittle. Heating the weld with a torch to low red heat, and backing the heat away, or putting a piece of fiberglass under
over it to allow it to "normalize". Whack one with a 2 pound hammer. If it snaps, it is in need of heat annealing. (after
rewelding it) Jim

I have repaired many a set of chains just like you did. Most chains are not hard enough to worry about the heat treating but some are. The older the more hard I have found. I buy used chains at sales all of the time. I must have 10-15 sets. In the fall I make good sets when I am not doing anything else. I have sets of chains for just about all the tractors we have. Some rarely get used but it sure is nice to have them when you do need them.

Also go take a cruise on U-Tube. Some of the tractor videos are so
funny. Couple of old F,,,s dragging the chains around and getting them
hooked up. Wait till you see the chains on that huge quarry front end
loader!

Take one of your junk rings, weld it, then put it in a vise and whack it with a hammer. See how much abuse it
will take. Start with easy hits, and work your way up until ti breaks. WEAR EYE PROTECTON!!
