She needs to build a relationship with a mechanic she can trust and its not JL... The number 1 and 2 cause of oil plug issues is a worn plug that should have been replaced and the sealing gasket.
Oil plugs don't last forever nor does the sealing washer/seal. Damaged threads on a plug will take the threads out in the oil pan over time.
Throwing a over sized plug at it may not have been a fix but a new pan was. Just be thankful the parts were reasonable and it was not a 10hr job like some are.
