JD, not quite in agreement except that management at the top making bad decisions is the deciding factor.
IH tried chasing too many technologies, farm, construction, transportation to be fantastic at any one. Just not enough R&D money to go around. They also tried marketing things that really didn't have enough demand like the 2+2 when MFWA was starting to gain in popularity. IMO the money dumped in developing the 2+2 should have gone into getting a power shift tranny on the market.
Sears biggest mistake as I see it was failing to appeal to the next generation of buyers. They were losing the old customers to death. The younger buyers were going elsewhere and Sears failed to go after that market. People didn't want to look at a catalog or go to the store. They wanted to look online. At the time Sears should have been looking at on line sales they too should have been looking at downsizing or eliminating the brick and mortar stores. Then when they started dropping their quality?
