The commonalities almost end after mismanagement by top management. Sears was unwilling to embrace online marketing in part due to the huge investment it had in brick and mortar. IH tried expanding into arenas that it had little expertise, did not have unity within the stockholder groups, and got dated on technology worse than a lot of its competitors did going into the 1970's. They may have been less forceful if the 1979 strike had happened at another time perhaps when IH was preeminent in farm equipment sales or at a time when demand was off tremendously. Going into the grain embargo of 1980 and the recession's impact on shipping was only going to lead to bad things happening.
