The filter should self-bleed through an orifice in a return fitting on the filter body.
That probably wasn't enough lift pump cycling to fill the filter and force all the air out. Gonna take quite a few more cycles now, and a LOT of cranking to get the system purged, I'm afraid.
ASSUMING the frame-mounted lift pump is working up to par.
As to WIX filters, I've helped several different guys out with filter changes on these, all we've ever used is WIX filters, the nearest Motorcraft units would be 60 miles away, and have had NO issues.
