7.3powerstroke won't start

I serviced th while truck including a wix fuel filter.
Started it up and it ran for 3-4 minutes than acted
like it was gelling up. It's a 2001 f250. Any ideas?

Yes Take the D--- WIX filter out and put a Motorcraft filter in.I never could run a Wix fuel filter in those engines.

Is there any smoke coming out of the tail pipe when cranking? I blew a fuse for my fuel bowl heater on my 02 and that kills the whole fuel system. Should be maxi fuse #111 under the hood near the master cylinder. But don't quote me.

Check the fuel pump fuse under the hood.
If it blew the pump is tired.

I had the exact same thing when I drove one.
The pump built head pressure then blew the fuse when it tried to run again.
Changed fuel pump mounted on the left frame rail, all good.

The filter should self-bleed through an orifice in a return fitting on the filter body.

That probably wasn't enough lift pump cycling to fill the filter and force all the air out. Gonna take quite a few more cycles now, and a LOT of cranking to get the system purged, I'm afraid.

ASSUMING the frame-mounted lift pump is working up to par.

As to WIX filters, I've helped several different guys out with filter changes on these, all we've ever used is WIX filters, the nearest Motorcraft units would be 60 miles away, and have had NO issues.

If it was running fine before you replaced the filter im sure its probably you just have air in the system. Is theres primmer pump on the truck the one you push by hand about the size of a quarter generally on top of the filter housing. open the bleed screw and pump it till nothing but fuel come out then tighten the screw and try to crank it. You might have to do this a couple 3 times then you should be rockin and rollin again.. Wix filters are just as good as the rest. Anything is better than nothing. Personally i have never had a problem with a Wix filter.

No hand pump on this engine.

It primes by cycling the electric lift pump.

Mine was running fine until I changed the filter then the pump
Quit.

Agree No problem with Wix filter ever.

I've had no problem with wix fuel filters. there is a check valve in the stem of that cann. & a small tang up inside that filter has to push down on it to open. must be fully seated

powerstrokes are unique critters, even with everything on par if cranking speed is slightly low, she won't pop, but yes fuel supply is important, no air, good oil, since the high pressure oil actually makes the high pressure fuel. glow plugs and relay right? get her spinning and snort some ether, just a little and only AFTER engine is spinning and see if she lights. DO not spray and thengo crank, you will blow the air box up. Good luck.

For the love of God, DO NOT USE ETHER ON A GLOW PLUG EQUIPPED DIESEL! The intake heater can create a fire ball, also. I fixed a Dmax once a genius decided to ether. $6K later, it ran again. WD-40 can be used because it is less volitile.

Yep--my 7.3 has glow plugs-Plus intake heater that comes on only @ a much lower temp. however, it probably self-tests regularly starting fluid might be problem without disable of both circuits

I have a 87 with 6.9. First time I changed filter it did like yours. From then on when I change the filter I fill either with fuel or lucas injector cleaner most of the way and top off with fuel. It's starts and runs after I started fill the filters.

You need to install a gauge before the electric pump and see how much vacuum it's drawing. I don't have the spec in front of me. But the fuel tanks delaminate and fill the strainer with small metal flakes.
Google Ford fuel tank delamination.

A 2001 superduty should have a plastic fuel tank...
