I would check and see if the cast spools are worn. Most of them have a reduced shoulder that goes right against the bearing so that the spool only rides on the inner race. Some disk setups us washers against the bearing to do the same thing. I would bet his spools are worn or he left out a washer/spacer that goes next to the bearings.
