We don't get long periods of deep frost to cause damage. The stone used in this building is a very hard limestone, castles built 1000 years ago are still in good shape, except for where they have been damaged in battle. The window s were never installed, but would have been the tiny panes of glass in lead frames. I am not sure that putting a tin roof over it would be a good idea. It has lasted 400 years without a roof, I personally think it would spoil the look of the place.
