1 for Sweetfeet

In 1595 a landowner in the English Midlands decided to create an ornamental garden at his home. He took 250 acres of land and planted orchards, dug fish ponds, designed a maze and built a summer house so that his guests could sit and talk and enjoy the gardens. The summer house was never completed as he went to jail in 1605 accused of treason. This picture shows the summer house as it is today. It was never completed and has never been used. There are no kitchens this is just a building for the enjoyment of his guests.

Phil,

Thank you so much for posting this. It's beautiful.

Pretty sure, I'll never make it across the pond... but it would be wonderful to see the treasures there.

It is in amazing condition from the looks. Do you have freezing temperatures there? It seems that water getting into it and freezing would over time destroy it.

We don't get long periods of deep frost to cause damage. The stone used in this building is a very hard limestone, castles built 1000 years ago are still in good shape, except for where they have been damaged in battle. The window s were never installed, but would have been the tiny panes of glass in lead frames. I am not sure that putting a tin roof over it would be a good idea. It has lasted 400 years without a roof, I personally think it would spoil the look of the place.

Interesting.

When our daughter was in Germany, she saw a house that had been continually occupied for over 800 years.

You are so right.. Schools here in the USA are the dream work of some engineer and/or architect and made for what they call beauty and not for efficiency. There are schools in Europe that are hundreds of years old and still in use. Here they would be condemned and a new one built that as you say,, would last at best 30 years. Here they want, what they call beauty instead of efficient. We can see how much smarter that has made the students.

My opinion,
Dick

Those old castles sure are interesting. Been neat to see it built with out modern tools and machinery. My sister in-law spent a semester in England and the collage was in an old castle. The school was in some way associated to a school here in Indiana. We went for a visit around thanksgiving and it was neat to see all the old building still standing is such good condition.

Here, the government (schools) build with the idea of using all the budget so the budget won't be cut. Remodeling a school is never done but plans are always on the table for a new school to be built to use up the budget. Sad!
