This is the ash that comes from the soot. If your system is working you won't have soot, only ash from burning the soot caught in that filter. The trick is to work the engine hard and limit idling and lighr loads as much as possible. Idleing and lite loads is what causes soot and the regenerations. That cummins requires virtually no cooldown or warm up time, so shut it off as much aa possible. UPS has been using them for years and shutting them off at each delivery with no issues.
