Clean you DPF filter

Got a shut down code yesterday and had to get my truck fixed. After some searching they determined that my dpf filter was plugged. Dart service had mentioned that I was due for a cleaning, but since everything was working good and I had had no problems with that system I didn't want to start anything. That was a mistake. Volvo doesn't give a recomended cleaning interval, only say that it should be regular. This is what I have after 520,000 miles. It's not real costly, and if I had done it at Dart they just keep exchamge ones so it's only an hour to do it. Anyway, lesson learned, I'll be cleaning it regularly now.

I am currently dealing with issues with the emissions system on a Cummins powered Ram 3500 so I feel your pain. I am wondering if you have any soot in the exhaust after all those miles? Thanks, Sam

This is the ash that comes from the soot. If your system is working you won't have soot, only ash from burning the soot caught in that filter. The trick is to work the engine hard and limit idling and lighr loads as much as possible. Idleing and lite loads is what causes soot and the regenerations. That cummins requires virtually no cooldown or warm up time, so shut it off as much aa possible. UPS has been using them for years and shutting them off at each delivery with no issues.

I have visible black soot out the tailpipe on startup and under acceleration. I've been arguing back and forth with the dealer for the last 3 months and after about 6 trips back for them to fix it they now tell me this is the way it's supposed to be. I've never had an issue with excessive soot build up. I just wondered if after that many miles there was any soot build up in the pipe after the dpf? I'm now off to a different dealer to try and get this issue resolved. I'd do it myself but I'm loath to buy a new DPF when it should be under warranty. I hope you have better luck than I getting back on the road. Sam

Crazy how clean exhaust is at the stack nowdays isn't it? With the exhaust on all of our trucks exiting under the headache rack, you can look right inside the stack and see that it is still as shiny as it was when new on a 3 year old truck

A buddy that works for Cat says the new industrial equipment is actually cleaning the air in part of California....air coming out the exhaust is cleaner than what is going in.

No power loss or gain after, that I noticed, but I did notice a milage drop. I thought it was from
driving faster, but it has gone up signifiqntly since. No increase as farmas regens go. Acording to the
computer today this truck has only regenerated 7 tikes since new not counting the manually activated
ones by mechanics.

My 2011 is setting the re gen light everyday, and then it will go out for awhile. The local dealer wants the truck for three days to clean the filter,it runs 5 days a week till they send a wrecker for it.

Look inside at the intake manifold once, they look as dirty as the exhaust used too, nasty. We won't be getting million mile trucks anymore I doubt, maybe a few.

On our cummins the dpf is missing but the only time there is smoke out the exhaust (with the tuner off) is when the fuel filter is getting plugged. Once it's really plugged I'll notice power loss. If you let it go past that you'll eventually get a low rail pressure code and check engine.

The filter is very fine and get plugged up frequently.

Yeah, know what you mean. What used to go out the exhaust now gets pumped in the intake...hard to make power out of exhaust junk instead of clean air

What he means is that with new trucks like mine in poluted cities like LA the air coming out the exhaust is cleaner than the city air so trucks clean the air.
