A lot depends on what is knocking. If it's a rod or main bearing, really good chance the crank will be out of spec from the failed bearing pounding it.
But, you won't know until you get in there.
If you take the head off, and are not going to pull the cylinder sleeves, be sure to bolt the sleeves down with a couple of bolts and washers. The sleeves just sit in the block with an oring seal at the bottom. If not bolted down, they can ride up, break the seal, leak coolant, trash will get underneath and hold the sleeve up. Whole nuther can of worms to get them reseated!
