Two thoughts here: first, you said you added dry gas additive. You might have more of that stuff percentage-wise than intended. This just happened last wk to my folks' garden tractor. Exact same symptom as you describe. I found out that a whole can of that additive (which is alcohol) went in...and the engine started doing what yours does. Had them drain the tank & refill with new gas...problem instantly cleared up. Second, when I put the Zenith on our 3000 - which is tired & low compression, I eventually dropped the float setting a bit. But we didn't have the kind of symptom you have. Hope this helps. P.s. - of course, also make sure you have good sparks, that vacuum advance is working, etc.
