Hard to say, but looking back, 1976 was pretty good for me. Out of college a couple of years, married for 3, bought our first house, hired in at GM (didn't stay past 5 yrs, though), wife was a head nurse at a hospital only 3 yrs out of college, together we were pulling in over $30,000/yr. Went out to a $$$ fancy restaurant every week for dinner, 2 new cars in the driveway, had money in the bank and saving a little each week.
On a larger scale, it seems there was less regulation and government getting into our business back then (1976). Didn't have all the lawsuits about every little thing, school districts didn't have their stupid zero tolerance policies, teachers could discipline kids, cops didn't pull you over with their guns drawn (they felt safer and so did we), common sense was still "common".
On the flip side, we had to get up every day for work, retirement was over 40 yrs away (didn't think about THAT back then), had no kids yet (they've been a blessing). I'm sure we stressed and worried about stuff just like we do today. I'm thinking that the "best of times" applies differently to WHO you're talking to and about WHAT.
