Since Jeff started farming he has been buying TMR from a local larger farmer who sells to several of the smaller fellows around the area. Since Jeff started farming, there has been a plethora of supplement and feed jockeys trying to convince him that their products can "make more milk/butterfat/you name it" than Han's mix alone will make. Even the local vets got into the act with "this mix doesn't have enough fiber. You need to feed some dry hay". It will up your butterfat and improve herd health. Jeff has been very leery about all of the "wonder products", has tried one or two which fellow farmers have indicated show promise. In his case, the only thing any of the supplements did was lighten his checkbook. For several months now he has been feeding some dry hay (very good quality) as per the vets recommendation. Well, butterfat has remained the same and milk production has gone down noticeably. Herd health remains unchanged also. This week spelled the end of that little experiment. The bottom line from all of this experimenting is that Han knows cattle nutrition like Bo knows baseball, all of the "experts" opinions not-withstanding. This is not to disparage any of the local vets or feed people. It's just that Han is one step ahead of them, and knows his stuff. His attitude is, if I don't know it, then I sure as shootin' am gonna learn it.

At any rate, all of this experimentation has proven that Han is on top of the nutrition game and Jeff can rest assured he doesn't have to look any farther as far as cattle nutrition is concerned. He can focus his attention on other management aspects.
