My wife, now retired, worked for years in student housing at the University of Nebraska.
She said she couldn't count, or believe, the number of incoming freshmen she had to teach how to do laundry. There was no end of 18 and 19 year olds who had never ever even run a load of clothes through a washer. Our daughter, who has always had an independent streak, said basically the same thing when she matriculated at Nebraska Wesleyan University and lived in a dorm. She said it was an absolute crime how some parents sent their kids off to college totally unprepared to cope on their own.
