24D is a growth regulator, it makes many broadleaf plants hurry up and grow so fast the green stuff you see wilts and dies, it over grows itself. However it does not affect the roots of a plant, and it does not affect grasses for the most part. It acts pretty fast, can see affects in a few hours sometimes. 24d has some residual effects on the soil! it will mess with a few types of seeds from sprouting for a short period of time! week to 4 weeks.... In hot temperatures you need to be real careful around flowers and tomatoes and other sensitive crops; the 24d likes to vaporize and float around on gentle breezes and settle in low spots and can hurt these sensitive plants even 100s of feet away.
Roundup is a non selective herbicide, it gets absorbed into the plant, carried down into the root, and kills the plant from the bottom up. Sometimes you don't see it working for days and days. It kills all types of green plants. (Well a few resistant weeds have developed...) grasses real good, broadleaves it kills pretty well. It has zero effect on seeds, anything sprouting the day after you spray will not be affected at all. Roundup is really good at killing grasses, and killing most annual broadleaves, and if you spray it in fall it is great at killing broadleaf per annuals , while they are feeding their nassive root systems. The fall application gets taken down into the root system and really dings these tough weeds well.
They are very different in how they work, in what plants they kill, and how long they last. Both have their place. Many mix thrm together to kill everything. They actually don't like being mixed together, it weakens both of thrm, but it still works pretty good sor spot spraying and killing off everything.
