You should be aware that you can pump the brakes on that tractor to build up some brake pressure. You also still had steering with the engine off, it just steers really really hard compared to the one finger power steering.
There are not any tractors that I would want to have stall out on a steep slope. I would look for a tractor that is 50 percent to 100 percent larger to handle the load at the speed you want to run without overloading. I'm a bit surprised the tractor stalled before you lost traction. If the tractor was not running right, that is a pretty clear signal not to take it into a tricky or dangerous situation.
