BBB is a private for profit corporation. Basically exhtorting money to say nothing or nice things about their members. If your a non member then they can slam you. Doing business in rural Iowa my families business was a BBB member. In a small community, Waterloo-Cedar Falls, it was pretty much mandatory. It was easy to stay in everybody's good graces as we tried to do it right, If a job didn't go well we fixed it, and for the 2% of the general public that are complete azzholes we pd them off to keep quiet and never did a job for them again.
Fast forward about 10 years I left IA and started a company in Houston TX. The BBB dues where exorbitant and more than I could afford. I also found that the BBB isn't nearly as powerful here as in the smaller comunities in Iowa. I never had a BBB complaint against me but did try to resolve a couple issues with other business's I was dealing with and got "0" results.
