I sell most of my calves at the Tennessee Livestock Producers sale barn in Columbia, TN. The people that actually deal with the customers are all very friendly and I like to do business with them. However, I have complained repeatedly about how the guys in the pens handle the cows/calves. As soon as the animals exit the trailers, the guys start yelling at them and hitting them with plastic paddles. They used to use whips and an occasional hot-shot, but I haven't seen that for quite a while. I actually grabbed a guy's hand one day who was going to use a hot-shot on one of my calves and threatened him with using the stick on him if I ever saw him shocking one of my calves.
There's no reason for them to upset the livestock like they do. I know that sometimes they get a wild cow in, but that is very rare. If I had any influence at all, those guys who handle the livestock roughly would get one warning, and then they'd be gone.
