Anyone deal with United Producers Livestock? OT

Our local United Producers Livestock auction(Gallipolis, OH)has let three of their full time emplyees go in the last six months. A couple have
been there 20 years and were well liked by the customers. You couldn't ask for nicer folks to deal with. They were let go with no notice and
were not given any reasons why. United Producers is a CO-OP and I thought it was a better organization than that. I am on their committee
and when I asked about the dismissals, I was told the committee has no say in hiring and firing. Even though I was elected to the committee, I
wouldn't be surprised if they tell me my services are no longer needed too! I guess a new man in charge of the CO-OP likes to show his power
with no remorse for his emplyees termination. I don't feel like doing business with them anymore and probably won't. I'm sure I am not alone.
So, if you deal with them, be aware of how they treat their emplyees.

I would probably want a lot more information if it was me before I made any kind of a statement or decision. Just because they were there 20 years or so means nothing, if fact may mean they thought they were above termination. Not saying that is the case, but thinking of the US workforce we have now, I sure wouldn't jump to say the coop did anything wrong.

Just an opinion, but I would keep your nose to the business end of the coop and let the hiring and firing to those in the know. Usually two sides to every story. Again, just an uninformed opinion. Bob

I took a load to St Louis Mi Monday. Things were normal. Same folks around. They do have some turnover pretty regular, but being only one sale a week,I'd think some of them would constantly be looking for a full time job and that's probably why they leave.
Like Bob said, you never know why they were let go. Federal inspectors like to hang out around the yard, and if there was any inkling of abuse in todays world,I'd think letting them go post haste would be the smart thing to do. Who knows what the real reason might be.

Buckeye,

I sell most of my calves at the Tennessee Livestock Producers sale barn in Columbia, TN. The people that actually deal with the customers are all very friendly and I like to do business with them. However, I have complained repeatedly about how the guys in the pens handle the cows/calves. As soon as the animals exit the trailers, the guys start yelling at them and hitting them with plastic paddles. They used to use whips and an occasional hot-shot, but I haven't seen that for quite a while. I actually grabbed a guy's hand one day who was going to use a hot-shot on one of my calves and threatened him with using the stick on him if I ever saw him shocking one of my calves.

There's no reason for them to upset the livestock like they do. I know that sometimes they get a wild cow in, but that is very rare. If I had any influence at all, those guys who handle the livestock roughly would get one warning, and then they'd be gone.

Bob, I sure would like to know the reason, but I couldn't get the other side of the story. This area of the country traditionally has the lowest prices for feeder calves in the United States. Fat cattle are always at least 10 cents below the market. I have a gut feeling that this may have something to do with buyers. There are only one or two major buyers and no competition. I do know the manager and some of the help would bid and sometimes buy animals if they were ridiculously below market price. I'm thinking maybe the buyers want to run the market. There may not be much of a market if no one looks out for the seller.

There's always 2 sides to the story. My local farmers coop has store managers that do all of their hiring and firing. The board doesn't have anything to do with that except in the case of the store manager. I think this works best. I've seen in the past a board member wanted a favorite nephew hired and it almost always was a disaster. The manager sees the employees every day not just a few minutes every few days.
If the manager is otherwise doing a good job, I wouldn't 2nd guess his personnel decisions.
