Recently the alt on my '96 Ram wasn't charging the batt. When I released the tension on the belt tensioner, so I could remove alt to be tested, the tensioner would not return to its original position. The tensioner had lost its tension. Alt checked good on the machine in town, so I replaced the tensioner and all works good now. May be something to check, if you haven't already done so...
