alternator (Dodge)

I have an 88 Dodge Dakota V6. Occasionally the ammeter show a low or discharge. Everything runs slow and dim. Often this
corrects itself. I had the alternator tested and it proved fine. I have cleaned all connections and grounds. I ran an extra
ground from the alternator to the battery ground just to be sure.

Any ideas appreciated.

Brushes shot. they get short enough they loose spring pressure and quit touching, then they touch again and alternator works. jstpa

Does it have the firewall-mounted voltage regulator?
It could be the problem, too. Replace with the mopar performance blue one. Or have the alternator converted to self regulation.

My experience is the regulator sticks at full output if it goes bad.

Measure the charging voltage across the battery terminals, should see 14 volts. If you only see 12 volts your alternator probably needs replacing. Hal

Recently the alt on my '96 Ram wasn't charging the batt. When I released the tension on the belt tensioner, so I could remove alt to be tested, the tensioner would not return to its original position. The tensioner had lost its tension. Alt checked good on the machine in town, so I replaced the tensioner and all works good now. May be something to check, if you haven't already done so...
