Hi Yes sludge is common on old worn out/poor serviced engines or some that have sat a while like 30 years, I got a couple tractors here that actually came close to ending up at Bills. both of them I removed the oil pan plates and literally hosed them out with parts cleaner, and a spray pot on the compressor. the oil filters were full of the same stuff to. I have had a few runners in for rebuild where the motor was so full of the stuff the bypass on the oil pan suction filter, was the only reason it had any oil/flow pressure to. that makes for a miserable rebuild as the stuff is right through the whole motor, and parts cleaner doesn't get it off very easy in some cases, and I don't have a hot tank close to use. Regards Robert
