Sometimes it looks like decisions are made in cases like this so the judges and lawyers are guaranteed repeat business. The law enforcement is also wasted in other areas. A few years ago a friend of mine and his wife were almost killed by a drunk driver. The guy has a repeat offender that didn't have a license or insurance. The law enforcement was on the other side of town using all their resources on a seatbelt sting.
The drunk driver spent a couple of months in jail and was turned loose. My friends wife was left cripple and in a wheelchair.
