The illegals I've worked with have legitimate Taxpayer ID numbers #s issued by the IRS, but no SSNs. The IRS knows the workers are illegal, but are happy to collect taxes, including social security. As for the illegals, they are glad to pay taxes in hopes that it will help their chances of getting residency if they've been working and paying into the system. I've never heard anything about tax filing scams. They don't care about citizenship, they want permanent legal residency. Most of all they don't want to get sent back to El Salvador.
