Initially I bought a cheap $50 one and when I did a lot of welding I noticed that I was getting flashed momentarily before the helmet darkened down. I recently bought a Lincoln branded one from air gas, that one works much better for me. I do not get the welders flash and it has a larger viewing area as well. It was pricy but like you said I only have one set of eyes. I would look into those helmets, you may be able to find it cheaper online some where.
