Looking at welding helmets for work (still at that John deere dealer) so I won't use it every day but that being said I will only have 1 pair of eyes, so I don't want to cheap out either. Specs I need are auto darkening with grind mode and the price range is anywhere from 50 bucks to 180, anyone try a cheap helmet and regret it? Like wise anyone not happy with the more expensive ones? Been looking at save phace welding helmets as they seem to have race reviews,

Looking at this hood

I tryed a cheap one could not find cover lenses for it had to buy and then cut them to fit (sucked) bought a top of the line jackson , when it first came out local welding stores did not have the inside cover lens now they are easy to come by. The cheap one worked good but it was nothing compaired to the Jackson
Hope this helps

I did a whack of welding (stick and tig) in the late 60's, early 70's. Only used a 'head kick' helmet - #10 lens. Tried an electric one - didn't like it. Not sayin' anything - technology changes!

Got my old cardboard Huntsman off the shelf to watch my grandson weld with my autodarkening helmet the other day. Forgot I had cheaters in the Huntsman. What a nice surprise. Never tried to buy cheaters for the big lens helmets.

If you are welding full time,by all means buy a top of the line hood. If '0' to a few hrs a week,a cheaper one will suffice.I
had a HF cheapie for years. When it quit,I now have a 'IronMan' from Tractor Supply. It was 'cheap' but is better than the
HF.However,I would hesitate to grind with it. Buy a separate clear face sheild for grinding. And..ALWAYS wear your safaty
glasses.

I have found this to be a durable compromise. jackson safety 3002514 welding helmet, shade 9 to 12,black Jim

The grind mode is more for the cutting torch, shade 9 is too dark fire new but the shade on grind mode is perfect, just a little tint to keep your eyes from hurting

Initially I bought a cheap $50 one and when I did a lot of welding I noticed that I was getting flashed momentarily
before the helmet darkened down. I recently bought a Lincoln branded one from air gas, that one works much better
for me. I do not get the welders flash and it has a larger viewing area as well. It was pricy but like you said I only
have one set of eyes. I would look into those helmets, you may be able to find it cheaper online some where.
