My dad 30 years ago had a 4 ft belsaw sawmill powered by a flat belt from case tractor. The tractor used too much gas. Tractor couldn't keep the rpms of saw steady, causing the blade to warp and not get uniform cuts. Wide blade made a ton of sawdust too.
As for me, When I have tree with good wood and nice log removed from yard I call my local guy who has a band sawmill. One time he gave me $300 for a walnut log. I was happy with the money, better than giving the wood away for firewood. Other times I get some of the boards he cuts. Doesn't cost me anything. He pick up log and returns me my little share of wood. Many sawmills don't want yard trees.
I've spent thousands having trees removed and mess cleaned up. From now on, I'll just pay to have tree dropped. Call guy with sawmill, have him remove the log. Then post on craigslist free firewood. Do this in the winter and all I have are the sticks to pick up with tractor. Saves me a lot of money too.
