I would like to find a mill , possibly one of the older military ones. Those wee ran by engine mounted overhead.Like to cut pine logs into either 4 by width(6 or 8 inch}, or 6 by width.Have 28 year old pine coming out of crp in 2 years. Always wanted log house or large cabin in my woods. If could find just blade mandrel and related parts might mount on used truck frame rails. Anybody know of anything.

Wilson,Have you thought about getting a portable band saw. They do a great job!You could use it to saw your logs for your cabin.Make all the lumber you need for the roof, door, window frames ect.You could also cut some dimensional lumber and even sell some. Then when finished you would still have a marketable band saw to sell.Probably get your purchase price back or even more. They are not all that expensive for a good quality band saw.

I will 2nd on the Woodmizer. I repair'd many things on an old wore out machine owned by
cousin. Just to cut up some Hemlock trees I wanted removed. Once I got it adjusted & running
fine I cut up the trees, & ended up cutting a few more. Wished I owned it. They are expensive
but worth the extra $$'s. I just feel it's a darn shame my cousin didn't take care of his.

don't know about a mill. I would like to find somebody in MI that can saw some 30 ft stuff. Most mills will only do about 16 ft. I know of one guy that can saw 24 ft.

Why do you need thirty foot long lumber?

Another Wood-Mizer vote. We've got an LT40 bought new in the mid-1980's when you had to go to Indy to pick up your mill at the factory. Cousin was sawing with it a couple days ago to do up some special-dimension cherry for cow stanchions and it still cuts just fine. Depending on the level of automation you want, price can vary widely, and used mills are often available. If the original poster is anywhere near their factory, I'd STRONGLY recommend a visit--even if you don't end up with one, you will learn a LOT about sawing, assuming they're still as accommodating as they were 30 years ago when my grandfather and uncle picked up theirs, bringing it back to northern NY behind Gramp's farm truck--a '76 Dodge 3/4-ton.

My dad 30 years ago had a 4 ft belsaw sawmill powered by a flat belt from case tractor. The tractor used too much gas. Tractor couldn't keep the rpms of saw steady, causing the blade to warp and not get uniform cuts. Wide blade made a ton of sawdust too.

As for me, When I have tree with good wood and nice log removed from yard I call my local guy who has a band sawmill. One time he gave me $300 for a walnut log. I was happy with the money, better than giving the wood away for firewood. Other times I get some of the boards he cuts. Doesn't cost me anything. He pick up log and returns me my little share of wood. Many sawmills don't want yard trees.

I've spent thousands having trees removed and mess cleaned up. From now on, I'll just pay to have tree dropped. Call guy with sawmill, have him remove the log. Then post on craigslist free firewood. Do this in the winter and all I have are the sticks to pick up with tractor. Saves me a lot of money too.

My neighbor has a Woodmizer which I borrow. Easy to run, works great in the oak I cut. Pine would be a breeze. You also loose a lot less to sawdust with a bandsaw, and along with less cut width is less horsepower which translates to less fuel.
