Sounds like the existing steel might have been nailed down, and the nails have a tendency to work out. My brother had to do screw down the panels of BIL's pole barns as the nails were working loose. He found that he could have made a business of just screwing down roof panels, with all the steel roof buildings on farms in that area - his own included.
Whatever you do, get the right equipment on site and work safely.
