My first thought was a cub lowboy as well. You could get a little newer one (yellow) and have hydraulics. The belly mower could stay on it and still be able to pull wagons, etc.
I've got an 8N. If he is mechanically minded he will understand the driven PTO and hydraulics thing. It may not bother him. It doesn't bother me. If he would be better off with live hydraulics go with the cub.
