Looking for a Orchard tractor

At work I have this co worker who has bought 2 1/2 Acres and he wants to start up an avocado grove. He has been looking at tractors for sale. It is so interesting I tell him to buy a Orchard tractor. The lat one he found to show me was a Allis chalmers 170 with a perkins engine in it. Yes a good size tractor but think what happens with only 2 1/2 acres. I went with him the person wanted 4,000.00 for it and the three piont did not even work plus it looked like it needed alot of work.Okay what I am trying to find is a tractor that has the features torwards of an Orchard. 36 to39 inches wide and set low to get around trees. Is comfortable for 2 1/2 acres to be used in. Please one more thing can this be found near California. Yes I am open for suggestion. Thanks Brent..

How about an(dont laugh) 8N Ford,or similar.Their wheels can be set to 48"(maybe narrower). With their low profiles and underslung exhaust.....Perfect

How about a comp;act utility tractor 25-30 hp. Mine gets lots of work around the house.

My first thought was a cub lowboy as well. You
could get a little newer one (yellow) and have
hydraulics. The belly mower could stay on it and still
be able to pull wagons, etc.

I've got an 8N. If he is mechanically minded he will
understand the driven PTO and hydraulics thing. It
may not bother him. It doesn't bother me. If he
would be better off with live hydraulics go with the
cub.

Dan,
How does that auger do when you hook a root or big rock?

I run an 18" and 24" on a good size tractor and it can be a workout at times.
But I am clay loam. So my soil is either hard as bricks or super sticky depending on the weather.

There is a Case 400 orchard in Calif for $1200. Venture down to the case forum for a link to it. That all said, would be kinda big for 2.5 acres.

A modern compact uitility would likely fit the bill better, but cost a lot more too.

Those are very scarce, have heard of them but never seen one. Was a lot of Ferguson 20 - 30- 35 and 40 plus MF 135 -150- 165- 175 and 180 tractors around but no 130's

I would have him look for a Kubota compact utility, They will do a lot of work, best to get the front wheel drive as well as I assume he is going to need a loader down the line. I have no idea what a avocado is but I would guess it is a plant he will have to put out that would be about like planting a 4' tall apple tree, heavy enough would want a loader to handle and probably a digger for the holes. How about posting a picture of a plant for those of us in the northern part of country that have never seen one? I don't even know what the avocado is good for. Hear of them but that is all. Actually I think that is to narrow for any tractor as a Cub Cadet or Wheel Horse garden tractor are 40" or more wide depending on how wide a tire is on them. He needs to think of more like 44" on width than 36". The only thing that would go down to the 36" is something like the old small frame Bolens garden tractor that took a 32" mower deck. You will find some but few garden tractors that will take a 38" deck but most will be 42" up.

I think I would be interested in a larger garden tractor or something like a Farmall Cub with a belly mower. Those can be had used for less than $2000 around here. gm

Rick,

To be honest I have only used that big auger one time and only went deep enough to plant a fruit tree. I got four augers with the PHD at an auction. Used it some when building my wood shed. The PTO is controlled with a button, either on or off, no easing into it, which makes it a little scary. Easier to hire my neighbor with his skid steer and much faster.

I have a JD 1630 as my work tractor. With 12X24 tires and 10 inch on the front, it can be narrowed down for orchard use but still has 50 hp to run a mower, rotovator and sprayer. Match it up with a JD loader and you would have a perfect unit. I had a Massey 135. It was a great tractor but the clutch was so hard my wife could hardly walk after a day moving apple bins.
My toys are CASE. I grew up on a VAO. The 430 is a great tractor but can't be narrowed as much and doesn't have as much hp. I guess it depends on your row spacing and equipment.

Soon as I saw avocado I figured it was from somewhere in California. On Craigs List in San Diego county there is a caterpillar for 3,000.00 it is a fairly old one. If you can get it for less it may do the job on 2 1/2 acres. Where is Cal. are you located? Stan

Whenever I think of a newer tractor in an orchard I think of plastic being damaged by the branches unless it is a true orchard model.

Question is why is everybody saying all the tractor models that cannot be nawwowed below 50" and a lot that cannot be narrowed to less than 6" when he clearly says he wants it to be between 36" and 39" wide. All that information is not doing him any good. Is there any that would be close to his requirements other than what I mentioned at 40-42" wide?

Measured my 5400N. 2355N and MI- if I had different tires I might get to under 50 inches wide, all three are right at 56 inches right now.

Landini makes a specialty tractor, AWD, articulated, high HP, VERY small and narrow, reversible even. Price and support would likely rule these out...
