It sounds like you have some slope to help drain the water away from your building. Next time it rains enough to start ponding water next to your building, take a shovel or a spade and start cutting a shallow channel to drain away the ponds. The ground should dig really easy when it's saturated and the standing water acts as a natural level. To start, just take out enough ground to get the water moving. Then come back and deepen the channel just enough to completely drain every pond. It goes pretty fast once the ground is soaked, you can probably finish the job in less than an hour.
Some guys are experienced enough to form drainage by eye on dry ground. I find working with standing water helps me see the slope easier. I wind up getting the job done faster and move less ground to get the job done when I work with standing water.
