I have a vise mounted on a big brake drum that's filled with concrete. I use it every day more as a welding vise than anything. Sometimes it moves when I don't want it to, but it is handy.
I always wanted to rig one on a mount similar to a trailer hitch receiver, then have sockets for it at various locations in the shop. Haven't got around to it yet.
The very best vise I ever used was huge, and bolted to a tree stump behind my shop. It was very inconvenient out there, but if I needed something held solid, it was worth rassling it out to the stump vise.
