I split all my wood by hand, but its only 3-4 face cord per year. Its not only therapeutic, its good exercise. The really big knotty wood goes to the bonfire pit. I can get through most of the tough stuff with 2-3 wedges.
I did the gym thing (played sports in college). The gym is boring and filled with a bunch of people who like to stare at themselves in mirrors.
I tell people all the time to come over and work with me on the trees. Tell them they could make a few $$ instead of paying a gym membership. I get one offer, my 74 year old dad, who works for free.
