Went by the feed store today to pick up some chicken feed. I usually buy 5 white egg layers every fall that way they can be laying by spring and I can replace the ones I have. So I ask the owner if she could order some white egg layers and call me when they came in. She said sure but they will not be here till January of February.
She told me baby chickens have been selling like hot cakes. They got in 50 Ameraucanas and 50 Production Reds on Thursday and they were sold out by noon today. Ideal (the hatchery they buy from) is completely sold out of all white egg chickens till next year.
Supposedly the price of eggs is driving everyone to buy chickens. Seems odd to me as time these chickens start laying; the farmers will have restocked their cages emptied by the bird flu; and egg prices will be back to normal.
