Baby Chickens

Went by the feed store today to pick up some chicken feed.
I usually buy 5 white egg layers every fall that way they can be laying by spring and I can replace the ones I have.
So I ask the owner if she could order some white egg layers and call me when they came in.
She said sure but they will not be here till January of February.

She told me baby chickens have been selling like hot cakes.
They got in 50 Ameraucanas and 50 Production Reds on Thursday and they were sold out by noon today.
Ideal (the hatchery they buy from) is completely sold out of all white egg chickens till next year.

Supposedly the price of eggs is driving everyone to buy chickens.
Seems odd to me as time these chickens start laying; the farmers will have restocked their cages emptied by the bird flu; and egg prices will be back to normal.

I noticed eggs were about $3.50 or so per dozen at Wally World the other day. I came home and hugged my one yard chicken. TDF

We get 4 to $5 per dozen, and can't get enough. I bought 25 layers this summer, they should start laying next month. But the cost of feed is high enough that I doubt there is much profit. One sure way to ruin a good hobby is supposed to be trying to make money on it!

Couple of days ago Aldi had large eggs for $1.39 dozen, Kroger was $2.79. $.99 store had small for $.99 dozen, I bought 16 dozen and some of them are weighing the same as the large from Kroger or Aldi. Even if they would be the small and I have found none that would be smaller than a medium I can just use an extra egg and still be money ahead.

I just started raising a few layers. I brought 12 bar rock pullets last April. They just started laying, I'm getting 10-11 eggs a day out of them. Its just my wife and I so been giving eggs away left and right. I have sold a few for 2 bucks a doz.

I have raised meat birds, 20 years ago and we kept a 100 layers on the farm growing up. So this is my first dealings with chickens in a long time. I figured I go out and feed some steers daily so a few chickens wouldn't be a big deal to care for. Been working out good so far. I grind and mix my own feed too so a small batch of chicken feed now and then not a big deal.

I enjoy eating a meal knowing everything on the table came from my small farm and was raised by us. I didn't start the chicken thing because of the problems they had last spring. It was just a coincidence I guess. Plus the fact I have more time to do it since I retired from my real job.

My grandfather said to buy chicks so that they start laying about Thanksgiving time, that way they will lay all winter. I have three barred rock pullets almost ready to come on line. The older birds are just now starting to taper off.

keeping them warm and watered the last few winters
.....led me to just eat them.
Gotta get some more chickens.....eggs too expensive
.......and eggs are...at the store..I'd rather they were out the back door.
I put away a 2-3 dozen a week myself, starting to really notice the price.

3 every day for breakfast plus what ever is used otherwise. They will keep in frig for 2 month easly.

The feed store I work at. Had their order come in and was gone in three weeks.Last year we didn't sell them all.
