Assuming its a One Wire alternator they take a certain RPM before they excite and a slow turning JD may have to run pretty fast before it engages. Sure if possible a smaller alternator will make it run faster provided you have a good and tight belt. Keep a good tight belt on her and as long as she kicks in once revved up I wouldn't worry about it.
