As some have said, every state is different. I just finished obtaining a title for an old truck I purchased at auction, and had receipt where I purchased, but I could not apply for a lost title in MO. The only person that can obtain a lost title is the last registered owner, and the duplicate title is sent to that person in their name, period. I ended up applying for a title, but had to do an abandoned vehicle title application, and that requires quite a lot of paperwork, and an inspection by Mo HP at their facility - they would not come to the vehicle at all. It took me 9 months total. Now with more knowledge I could likely do it in 2 months, but the Highway Patrol was out a month alone before I could even take it in. Knowing what I know now, I doubt I would buy the truck if I had it to do over, and I have not even attempted to fire it up to see if the engine is even worth anything. In MO you would have to have something of fair value to be worth the trouble, and I bet many give up before they accomplish it.
