Equipment Trailer Title

I live in Alabama and have an equipment trailer that I am selling for a friend. He moved to California and left me the tag receipt.
I had a guy look at it today and asked to see the title.
This is a 16 x 6.5 older model trailer and I am no aware that
they have titles.
Anyone know before I call court house and [i:bea961a7c1]TRY[/i:bea961a7c1] to talk to someone that probably doesn't know?

Best thing would be to apply for a lost title. Cops would have to come out and check numbers to
make sure it's not stolen. So look for VIN #'s

Some few years back I bought a 1/4 ton military trailer from out of state and went to the Virginia DMV to get plates and title. Of course there never was an original title; Uncle Sam didn't need one. Long, long discussion resulted in plates and a title issued by the state that is marked "not a title". I asked what that meant and the reply was that I couldn't sell it. Hmmm. Would seem that the next buyer would reproduce what I went through. Anyway, that was in Va. Others I know have had titles issued by SP as mentioned earlier.

Every state is different. In MN you don't need a title or licence for an ag use only trailer; but you better be empty or hauling farm supplies only!

In Minnesota if you want to update a farm trailer to a titled, haul anything trailer, you have to submit a homemade trailer request and get it titled
that way, then licences. There is a fair amount of tax to pay to get up to a licence to bolt on.

It sounds like you are going across state lines with the sale, so I would investigate which state has the better options to get to what you need.

Well, first of all, you need to talk with the secretary of state's office, (DMV). They will know the law in your state. In Michigan, trailers aren't titled - except trailers with living quarters, (campers and mobile homes). All you need is a signed bill of sale. Secretary of state will issue plate and registration, After taxes and fees are paid. Your state may be different.

Your DMV at the courthouse, or whoever issues and transfers titles in your state, is the first place I would ask.

The only answer that matters is the one you should get from the office that registers vehicles in your state. Laws in other states will have no
bearing on your situation.

Yea I read it wrong, thought he was selling it to someone in California..... In that case a buyer might be wanting a title if their state is difficult about such things. But not in this case.

I AL there are not titles on trailers.

To get a tag on you need a form filled out by a State Trouper or some other official when they inspect the trailer, homemade or factory build.

I had to have one inspected even though it was made by Better Build trailers and I had the paper work with it.

As some have said, every state is different. I just finished obtaining a title for an old truck I purchased at auction, and had receipt where I purchased, but I could
not apply for a lost title in MO. The only person that can obtain a lost title is the last registered owner, and the duplicate title is sent to that person in their
name, period. I ended up applying for a title, but had to do an abandoned vehicle title application, and that requires quite a lot of paperwork, and an inspection by Mo
HP at their facility - they would not come to the vehicle at all. It took me 9 months total. Now with more knowledge I could likely do it in 2 months, but the Highway
Patrol was out a month alone before I could even take it in. Knowing what I know now, I doubt I would buy the truck if I had it to do over, and I have not even
attempted to fire it up to see if the engine is even worth anything. In MO you would have to have something of fair value to be worth the trouble, and I bet many give
up before they accomplish it.

(quoted from post at 04:18:24 09/18/15) EXCLUSIONS: No Alabama certificate of title shall be obtained for:

(o) Utility trailers. A utility trailer is a vehicle without motive power designed to be drawn by a passenger car or pickup truck.

Thanks John---That's what I needed to know

Same in Ohio, when I got my stock trailer from the original owner all I needed was a bill of sale and a weight slip from an authorized scale to get a license (trailer license cost based on weight).
