I used a chain for the top link once. It does float nice as expected. BUT... Came up out of a ditch with the rotary mower and I lost my horsepower all of a sudden so I instinctively mashed down on the clutch. Looked behind me to find the rotary mower sticking straight up in the air and about to go over onto my head. The front of the mower caught a culvert I didn't see in the weeds. I promptly went home to find that third link. I was too much in a hurry to go looking for it earlier but decided I had all kinds of time to be safe if I wanted to live for my wife and children. I'll never use a chain for a third link again. Better to have the third link on and kill the motor then have the implement tip up.
