Tried the A with the rotary mower

Ever since ive put the lift arms on (for skidding logs) ive been thinking of doing this, no toplink so this is now a semi-mount rotary mower. While it does work, its not really suited to this tractor. I was able to fine-tune the load needle on the carb though, have a 7ft sickle bar mower i could fix up and put on, be alot less fuel per acre... But, it was neat to try out and hear the A work.

I am afraid that without a top link that mower can hit you in the back of your head if it hits a rock or a stump.

I too use my mower without the top link. Very rough ground and it floats nice. I have tried to hook it on a rock and see how high it would come up. Not Much, but I think I will mount some larger skids on it. You could make top link out of chain and leave some slack.

I used a chain for the top link once. It does float nice as expected. BUT... Came up out of a ditch with the rotary mower and I
lost my horsepower all of a sudden so I instinctively mashed down on the clutch. Looked behind me to find the rotary mower
sticking straight up in the air and about to go over onto my head. The front of the mower caught a culvert I didn't see in the
weeds. I promptly went home to find that third link. I was too much in a hurry to go looking for it earlier but decided I had all
kinds of time to be safe if I wanted to live for my wife and children. I'll never use a chain for a third link again. Better to
have the third link on and kill the motor then have the implement tip up.

I have used the five foot rotary mowers without hooking the top link for over 40 years. I did hook it up on the Oliver 1650 so I could lift it up and set it down over a bales to grind them up but not for mowing. I have never mowed with them where I had stumps or large rocks that could not be seen.

YOu run this tractor with a brush hog & have a chain drapped over the seat back rest?

(quoted from post at 18:08:47 08/10/15) Isn't there a sliding top link that will let the mower float, but stop it if the rear raises too far?
yes, it does have a flaoting top link hookup, but there is no top link on this tractor, i put lower lift arms on from a ford N series and use them with the powertrol along with the ford-style drawbar and V-plate to lift and drag logs with. it would be easy to fab up a top link mounting spot, but i cant see ever using a "normal" 3-point implement with this tractor. closest thing i might consider would be a back blade, but not with the "road - gear reverse" speed this tractor has. i doubt i'll use this mower on this tractor again, i normally have it on the 1020 'deere. for most other light 3-point stuff i'll use the 2N when its back together. where i was mowing was around the outside of a field that ive done before and was quite familer with the terrian involved. yes, i carry a log chain on the seat back, theres 2 of them actually and there hooked together and draped in such a way that they stay put.

It only takes once for a tragedy to happen. You've been lucky for 40 years. Lots of people have died in accidents doing the same thing they've always done. I personally don't temp fate.

when I did some rigging to drag my finishmower around with my Farmall SH (Ford lift arms attached to the horseshoe hitch at the right spot for shaft length) I just rigged a long toplink to the seat base. works fine

side benefit....anything going wrong back there, I can 'feel' it
last week, I had a solid tire coming apart. I could feel it thru the seat vibrating...turned around to see what was up...ahh..I see :)
