You can bale without live PTO - it's just a challenge. I used my brother's Ferguson TO-20 to finish some baling last year and got real good of knocking that thing out of gear FAST. I also kept the windrows smaller, i.e. no doubling up on them.
My Wife's grandfather ran a small mom/pop dairy his whole working life. He had Farmall H and Super H tractors - neither I think had live PTO. He probably baled 10's of thousands of bales and more in his lifetime without live PTO.
But.....
As was mentioned earlier - life ain't so hard on the farm when baling hay with a tractor that has live PTO.
OTOH - might be fun to work the JD with the baler in spite of the lack of live PTO.
