New Holland Baler..........

Kc Jorns

New User
Hello out there , Im looking for "advice" on using a New Holland 276 Baler ; Im wanting to buy a John Deere "B" tractor to run this baler but thinking I may want an "A" tractor? Is there enough "horsepower" in the "B" to run a 276 baler? Thanks.

A B might do it, but I have my doubts. Most older New Holland balers with small engines have about 17 to 20+ HP, a B only has 16 belt HP - thats to run the baler and drag it around. You sure wouldn't use it in heavy hay.

I too like the As and Bs but to run the baler, find a 50,60 or520,620, as they have live PTO and perform much better on the baler.

Even with an A,I wouldn't recommend it. If you haven't bought the tractor yet,I think I'd be looking for a 60 instead. You'd find out the first time around the field that baling with a tractor without live PTO isn't a great idea

The A doesn't have live PTO?

Two cycl tractor isnt great on a baler get a 4cycl live power isnt a big deal. We baled tousands of bales without one.

Neither the A or B have live PTO and on a baler you sure as heck want live PTO. Yes it can be done with out live PTO but it is a pain even for some one who has run them for years and a newbe well that makes it a whole lot harder. Years ago I ran a JD-A pulling a baler but it was not fun or easy to do

Ok thanks guys! Ill save the A and B for a parade tractor ; I have other tractors to bale with.

I own a NH271 and use either my Oliver 77 or my D-17 to bale with. Have done it with my W45 and the IH340 also but all have some form of live PTO

I'd love to get one of my FIL's old D17s to bale with, the low speed 1st gear would be very handy in the heavy brome I've been baling. But his wife refuses to sell any of them (4), she'd rather see them rust away as they sit year after year then allow someone to get some use out of them.

You can bale without live PTO - it's just a challenge. I used my brother's Ferguson TO-20 to finish some baling last year and got real good of knocking that thing out of gear FAST. I
also kept the windrows smaller, i.e. no doubling up on them.

My Wife's grandfather ran a small mom/pop dairy his whole working life. He had Farmall H and Super H tractors - neither I think had live PTO. He probably baled 10's of thousands of
bales and more in his lifetime without live PTO.

But.....

As was mentioned earlier - life ain't so hard on the farm when baling hay with a tractor that has live PTO.

OTOH - might be fun to work the JD with the baler in spite of the lack of live PTO.

It's in there. I'm still tweaking it though. Just thought I'd take it out for a test drive. Can't be too careful you know.

Had an old neighbor here who ran an AC Roto Baler with an A for a few years. That was fun to sit back and watch. lol

This D-17 was pulled out of a fence row not running. 3 or the 4 cylinders appeared to have a mouse nest in them but after a good bit of ATF and a few hours of messing with it she not purrs like a kitten but is ugly as sin

If I were looking a terrible tractor to run a square baler it'd be a JD B and an A would be my 2nd choice.Go find an Oliver 77 or an Allis Chalmers D14,15 or 17 great square baler tractors.

I have owned seven NH 276 balers. I currently own two. IF your going to bale in very heavy hay and want to get something done your going to need some more horse power. I run mine with a Oliver 1655 and the governor talks when the plunger hits when your pushing the bale through.

Baled lots of hay over 30 years with a JD A,B, & D. No live PTO. You do have to pay attention to what you are doing, but it can be done.

shux the A will do it fine ,, and hammer t hat poppers governor with every stroke ,. LOL. you will luv it !,, although I agree with most that a bigger tractor is a good idea , I Got to tell You .. while dad workt a job ,,. my Mother used to bale a lot of hay with a VAC Case on hillsides just fine ,,. today I did exactly that and the VAC Case and nh 273 Baler did fine ,, never wanted for more power .. even baled in 3rd gear ,, come on over to Case and read about the TUF, VAC I just posted about ,.. ..

That would have to be an unstyled B with the 4 1/4" engine to have that power, The early styled B with the 4 1/2" engine had more, about 20. And the late gas B's with the 4 11/16" engine it was 28. The all fuel A engine a from 41 to 52 only had 29 HP. I know nothing about that model baler but on the McCormick 46 baler the 49 B actually handled it better than the 50 AR that is just the standard tread version of the A. Never bothered trying to put the 51 A on as it was too big for ease of handling and usually had cultivators mounted for first cutting. Never had live pto on baler and did not miss it. Same with combine.

I run a 276 on a Massey 40B, 53hp, with a loader, while baling it pushes a bit, I can not imagine not getting sea sick
on anything smaller.
