If it was running fine before, the float level is not likely the problem, they are not known to go out of adjustment on there own.
On rare occasion I have seen a needle stick on the seat if the float arm did not have a spring or tab to pull it off the seat when the float drops.
A metal float can develop a pinhole in it.
But then the symptom would be flooding from a lack of being able to close the needle and seat.
I would be checking for:
a dirty fuel filter
an obstruction in the fuel system
pinched or dented line
faulty fuel pump
plugged tank vent...
Any of the above can limit the flow of fuel enough to cause the issue you are describing.
You need to check the volume of fuel getting to the carb.
Remove the fuel line at the carb, point it into a container and observe the flow while cranking.
A plugged passage in the carb could cause your symptoms but it is unlikely it would come and go after sitting for a while unless it is sediment in the bottom of the float bowl.
