If UPS delivers it to you with no signature and it is damaged, you do have recourse. The shipper, by rights, has to agree to let UPS deliver it with no signature, and UPS will work with you if you get in touch with them.
90% of the people won't bother, and that is what they are banking on. If the box is just damaged but the contents are not, then who really cares?
Don't think just because you weren't there to sign, there is not someone liable.
